Here are a few things that you can try out to fix this issue for your Netgear adapter. 

Method 1: Check the Adapter

Before moving to other solutions, connect your adapter to another PC. The adapter remains unidentified if it is faulty due to some reasons.

Method 2: Check the USB Cable 

If you are connecting the adapter through a USB cable, then ensure that it is USB 2.0 for the 2GHz band. Whereas, you will require a USB 3.0 to work on 5GHz band.

Disable USB Root Hub Power Preserving

  1. Right-click the Start menu and open Device Manager on Windows 10 PC. Whereas, others can search for it in the Windows search box.
  2. Locate ‘Universal Serial Bus Controllers’ and expand this section. 
  3. Right-click on ‘USB root hub’ and select ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu. 
  4. Click the ‘Power Management’ tab and uncheck ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ option. 
  5. Click ‘OK’ to confirm the changes made.
  6. Repeat the same steps for remaining USB hubs as well. 
  7. Restart the PC and connect it to the Netgear adapter. 

Disable WLAN Adapter Suspend

  1. Click on the Start menu and enter ‘Device Manager’ into the Windows search bar.
  2. Expand ‘Network Adapters’ and look for your ‘Netgear Adapter.’
  3. Right-click on Netgear Adapter and open the ‘Properties’ window.
  4. Move towards the ‘Power Management’ tab and uncheck the ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ box. 
  5. Disable ‘Selective Suspend’ under the ‘Advanced’ tab and save the changes.

Method 4: Change Channel Settings

  1. Right-click the Start menu and open the Control Panel window. 
  2. Click ‘Network and Internet’ and open the ‘Network and Sharing Center.’
  3. Select ‘Change adapter settings’ and right-click on your Netgear router to open ‘Properties.’
  4. Tap the ‘Configure’ button and navigate to the ‘Advanced’ tab. 
  5. Scroll to ‘WZC IBSS Number Channel’ and choose ‘1,6, or 11’ from the drop-down menu. 
  6. Tap on the ‘Save’ button to let the changes take effect. After completing the process, see whether your PC can recognize the Netgear adapter or not. 

Method 5: Download Latest Netgear Routers

  1. Open Device Manager as we have discussed earlier and found your Netgear adapter. 
  2. Right-click on it and choose ‘Update Driver’ from the context menu. 
  3. Select the first option, that is, ‘Browse my computer for driver software.’
  4. Then pick up a driver from the list of device drivers available on your PC. 
  5. Click on the ‘Next’ button and check ‘I have a disk’ option.
  6. By default, the drivers should be in ‘[SYSTEM_DRIVE]program files(x86)netgeardriver’ or a similar location.
  7. Some navigate to the particular location and select the ‘.inf’ file. 
  8. Finally, click the ‘OK’ button to save the changes.

An Alternative Way

  1. Open Device Manager from the Start menu and find your Netgear adapter. 
  2. Right-click on it and choose ‘Update Driver’ from the context menu. 
  3. Choose ‘Browse my computer for driver software’ and access the list of device drivers on your PC. 
  4. Uncheck the box next to ‘Show compatible Hardware’ and select ‘Netgear, Inc’ from the submenu on the left pane. 
  5. Then, select the Netgear model from the right submenu and click on the ‘Next’ button. 
  6. Click ‘Yes’ on the ‘Update Driver’ warning dialog box and restart the system. 

Method 6: Scan for New Hardware

If the problem is arising due to default drivers, then you can resolve it by deleting the current network adapter drivers. After that, scan your PC for new hardware and install the same on it. 

  1. Launch Device Manager and find out adapter Netgear adapter. 
  2. Right-click on the device and choose ‘Uninstall’ from the drop-down menu. 
  3. After uninstalling the driver, click the ‘Scan for new hardware’ link.
  4. Windows will automatically scan for new hardware and install the same on your PC. 

Method 7: Disable Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing

To ascertain whether the problem is occurring due to the Firewall or Network Connection Sharing option, disable them temporarily. 

  1. Open Control Panel and navigate to the ‘System and Security’ section. 
  2. Choose ‘Windows Firewall’ and click ‘Turn Windows Firewall on or off’ option in the left pane. 
  3. Check the ‘Turn off Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended) option and click the ‘OK’ button. 
  4. Now, go back to the Control Panel window and choose ‘Administrative Tools.’
  5. Click the ‘Services’ tab and locate the ‘Internet Connection Sharing’ option. 
  6. Right-click on this item and select ‘Properties’.
  7. Move towards the ‘General’ tab, change the ‘Startup Type’ to ‘Disabled’ and click ‘OK’ button. 
  8. Restart the system and check whether it has resolved the issue or not.
